BE's main purpose is to bring women together both online and face-to-face in order to make a greater impact within their communities. There are many facets to this (and many new developments to come!!); there are monthly socials, community projects, online resources, and a weekly internet radio program. We want to use each of these as platforms for women to come together to give what they have and get what they need. A large component to developing this strong sense of community is to encourage local shopping...which brings us to an exciting new development! We are going to be pooling our resources with local businesses and promote them through weekly online contests. This week we are so excited to share this video of Tricia Rivas. On top of being a hairstylist and freelance makeup artist, she is also heavily involved in her community. Judy's Hair Co (DBA Trixie's) is located at 3414 SW 9th St in Des Moines, 515-244-9671. Stay tuned for the contest coming this Friday! Tricia is giving a complimentary haircut (valued at $30) to one lucky winner! BE sure to watch the video carefully in order to answer Friday's question correctly!

Resolve to BE Involved!

Hi all! Hope those of you who are local are enjoying this heat wave! Never thought that 20 degrees could feel so good! Now if only the 10 foot snow drifts on either side of my driveway would melt away...

With many of us making resolutions to eat better, exercise more, etc, why not make the New Year's resolution to BE more involved? We've all heard the saying "It's better to give, than to receive". This saying really is true; giving really does make you happier. There have been numerous studies done to find out why exactly the act of giving leads to happiness. The surprising conclusion is that these charitable acts actually affect our brain chemistry! There is a term called the 'Helper's High', which refers to the warm and fuzzy feeling people experience upon giving. This euphoric feeling  comes as a result of endorphins being released into the body; these endorphins give us increased energy and lower our stress levels. Lowering your stress levels means better overall happiness. So, this 'Helper's High' can actually make a positive impact on your overall health! Bottom line, charity is not only good for others, but it's good for you, too! So, why not make a New Year's resolution to BE happy, BE charitable, and BE more involved? It'll be good for your health!

Here are just a few of the countless ways to BE involved in our community within the next few weeks! If you have anything you want to add to this list, please leave a comment below!

Today is the LAST day to make a donation to support Carrie Webber's participation in the PF Chang's Rock and Roll Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training. She is running in honor of Zac Duncalf, a 4th grader from Urbandale. Her efforts, and all the others involved with Team in Training, are helping to find a cure for Leukemia and Lymphoma; a cause near and dear to our hearts. Help support her at http://pages.teamintraining.org/ia/pfchangs10/cwebber

Remember, giving doesn't always have to involve money! This Saturday, January 16th from 10am-2pm there is a great (FREE!) event to help feed the hungry. RDG Dahlquist Art Studio is collaborating with the DMARC emergency food pantry to provide handmade bowls for the 4th Annual Soup Supper. Bring a friend – build a bowl – feed a family…316 SW 5th Street in Des Moines, hope to see you there!

On Sunday, January 24th beginning at 2pm, there is a benefit concert at Miss Kitty's in Clive to raise money for 9-yr old Katanya Yingyoth. Katanya was born deaf and, in order to hear, requires an expensive implant. We invite you to join in the celebration of music, friends, and the chance to make an enormous difference in a little girl's life. Let's help Katanya hear the music!

Happy New Year!!! Can you believe the first decade of the new millenium is over??! Unbelievable. We had such an amazing year, and look forward to all that is to come in 2010! Thank you to each of you that has been involved; whether it was coming out to a BE Social, forwarding our monthly newsletter to a friend, or participating in our weekly BE Challenges. You are each a 'BE Girl' and we are anxious to continue on this amazing adventure with you!

Over the past few months we have been involved with a couple area shelters. We have learned that one of the most needed, and least donated, items are feminine hygiene products. We have had an ongoing drive to collect these products, but have decided to really focus on this during January and February. We have a lot of fun things coming up and will update you once they are solidified. I wanted to share something with you now though that I came across yesterday...there is a local woman named Amy Dix who has a website called www.HousewifeHacks.com. On this site, she shares 'tips and tricks for living large on less' and believe me, she's GOOD! One of my resolutions is to pay more attention to coupons and really trying to save money on my everyday purchases. Yesterday, Amy shared a way to purchase two 28 count package of Stayfree Maxi Pads for FREE! What a perfect way to show that 'giving back' doesn't always have be about 'giving money'! So, here's how it works...

Walgreens Price = $5.99
Use BOGO coupon from 1/3 RP* (you only use 1 cpn but you’ll buy 2 packs)
PLUS
Use $3/1 in-ad coupon* (you only need 1 coupon. It’ll deduct $6.)
Your Price = FREE after coupons

*The translation:In Sunday's (1/3) Des Moines Register there is a coupon insert called RedPlum (RP) that contains a 'buy one, get one free' (BOGO) coupon, you'll use this to purchase 2 packs of the maxi pads. Also found in that paper is the Walgreen's ad which contains a coupon for $3 off a pack of Stayfree Maxi Pads which you can use on BOTH your packages, so it'll deduct $6 off your purchase! Making your price FREE!!

This sale is good through Saturday, January 9th. I encourage each of you to take a few minutes to try it out! I am going to do it myself and video the process to show you how easy it really is! If you have feminine hygiene products you would like to donate, or have questions concerning the drive, just leave a comment here! I also encourage you to check out Amy's site, www.HousewifeHacks.com and subscribe to her feed! Happy New Year everyone, and happy saving!
