Hi everyone! We hope you are all staying safe and warm in this frigid weather we've been having! We are crossing our fingers that we will be able to dig ourselves out of all of this snow by the time school is let out for the summer! Hopefully there will even BE a summer vacation, the way these snow days have been adding up!!!

Today on BE Inspired, Tricia Rivas with Judy's Hair Co (DBA Trixie's) joined us to talk about being a small business owner & juggling a career and 3 kids. Tricia is a hair stylist and freelance makeup artist, as well as our local representative for PSI (Postpartum Support International). She is a passionate woman, and an excellent resource for women who have or are currently battling postpartum depression. Did you know 1 in 8 women suffer from postpartum depression? Women of every culture, age, income level and race can develop perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. This means you or someone you know could very easily become one of these women. The good news is there are several effective treatment options to help you recover, and a wonderful woman here in our community is available for you to talk to directly. Although the term postpartum depression is the most frequently used, there are actually a variety of forms, each with varying levels of severity; there is perinatal depression, anxiety, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder, and psychosis.

(this questionnaire was taken from www.Postpartum.net)

Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders Overview

  • Are you feeling sad or depressed?
  • Do you feel more irritable or angry with those around you?
  • Are you having difficulty bonding with your baby?
  • Do you feel anxious or panicky?
  • Are you having problems with eating or sleeping?
  • Are you having upsetting thoughts that you can’t get out
    of your mind?
  • Do you feel as if you are “out of control” or “going crazy”?
  • Do you feel like you never should have become a mother?
  • Are you worried that you might hurt your baby or yourself?

Any of these symptoms could possibly indicate that you have a form of perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, such as postpartum depression. Left untreated, these symptoms would worsen. We urge you to get the attention you need and DESERVE. Tricia welcomes calls and emails from you, anytime of the day. You can find out more by visiting www.Postpartum.net and clicking 'get help'. Simply click 'Iowa' and Tricia's information will appear.

At the end of the show, Tricia also shared some fun makeup & fashion trends for spring (to help us all forget about the frigid weather for a little bit!!) Stay tuned to watch the podcast (available here next week) to learn more! We will also be running another contest next Friday! Tricia will be giving the winner the choice of either receiving a complimentary haircut OR a complimentary makeup lesson! Check back for more details!
